Quoting Billie

A musical film is my idea of heaven. You can pre-record, you don’t have to sing live. Singing live was the bit I hated the most. I never felt like a confident singer.

EW’s Best Of 2015: How Penny Dreadful Showrunner John Logan Crafted Lily’s Big Speech

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: We’ve talked a bit before about how Billie crafted her performance leading up to this scene in “Memento Mori.” Was there anything she did here that surprised you?

JOHN LOGAN: Billie always surprises me, and she’s one of the actors I really, really enjoy writing for because no matter what I think she’s going to do something staggering that I didn’t imagine. The character of Lily — first Brona, and then Lily — was all about, really, getting to that speech. And I always knew, from years ago, that it would be a slow burn of the character until that episode, when suddenly the grand plan was revealed. I talked to Billie about it at length and said, “Trust me, you’re going to love me or hate me for that speech.” But she just brought such passion to it, and such anger, and such outrage, that I couldn’t have been happier with the way it came out.

The as-yet-unnamed series will be written by writers from the Showtime drama.

The supernatural struggle for the heart of Victorian England will expand in scope next year, with Titan Comics securing a deal to produce comic books based on Showtime’s popular Penny Dreadful, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The first comic book series based on the show is currently scheduled for a spring 2016 release and will be written by Penny Dreadful scriptwriters Chris King, Krysty Wilson-Cairns and Andrew Hinderaker. Art for the series will come from Heavy Metal’s Louie De Martinis.

“This incredibly exciting new comic series is going to captivate fans of horror, literature and Penny Dreadful alike, giving them a whole new insight into the lives of the fascinating, even bewitching, characters,” Lizzie Kaye, editor of the Titan comic, told THR.
